Cost per hectare is the figure that decides whether an MD2 pineapple growing area makes money. Yet most farms only arrive at this figure once the season is over, pieced together from input purchase invoices and end-of-period spreadsheets. By then, every cost overrun is already a fact.
Key points
- A true cost per hectare comprises four groups: inputs per application, labour and machinery, irrigation and energy, and management overheads allocated to each plot.
- The biggest error lies not in the calculation formula but in how data is recorded: recorded late, recorded from memory, inputs allocated by estimate.
- Recording data at the moment the work is done in the field makes cost per plot visible during the season, while there is still time to adjust.
What cost per hectare includes
In an analysis of how to calculate cost per hectare for high-value crop farms, the editorial team of AGRIVI (Croatia), a farm management software developer, divides costs into four groups. Applied to an MD2 pineapple growing area, they can be read as follows:
- Direct inputs: planting material, fertilisers, plant protection products, growth regulators and flower induction agents. These must be costed per application on each plot, not per purchase invoice.
- Labour and machinery: labour hours, fuel and equipment depreciation allocated to each plot. According to AGRIVI, this is where spreadsheet-based tracking usually breaks down first.
- Irrigation and energy: particularly important for crops where water directly affects fruit quality.
- Allocated management overheads: management time, field inspections, compliance records and reporting. These are real costs, but they are rarely allocated to individual plots.
For MD2 pineapple, the first group contains two items worth noting: planting material (especially tissue-culture plantlets) is a large investment at the very start of the cycle, and flower induction determines the timing of harvest. Both items should be recorded plot by plot from the day of planting, because they govern the entire harvesting and sales plan that follows.
Why the end-of-season spreadsheet gives the wrong figure
AGRIVI points out that the problem is not the spreadsheet itself, but the manual data entry behind it. Three common errors:
- Work is completed in the field but recorded afterwards, often from memory.
- Inputs are bought in large batches and then divided among field plots by estimate.
- Machine hours are not recorded consistently, and sometimes not at all.
The result is a cost picture that looks complete from a distance but is full of gaps up close. By the time the figures are compiled, the season is over and the profit that has been eroded cannot be recovered.
Recording data on the spot: the change lies in timing, not in software
The approach AGRIVI describes is to record costs at the moment the work is carried out. When a work order is completed in the field, the system records what was used, how much, who did the work and on which plot, and that data flows straight into the cost structure. Managers can see cost per hectare by plot and by cost category during the season, instead of waiting for the year-end accounts.
For export pineapple growing areas, this record-keeping serves more than cost calculation. Decree 38/2026/ND-CP requires a growing area applying for a code to keep records and store information on its production and harvesting processes (Article 6(3)). The same plot-level data set both supports accurate costing and serves as the documentation needed to keep the growing-area code.
What accurate figures make possible
- Controlling variances during the season: compare plan against actual spending plot by plot and intervene before a small overrun becomes a large one.
- Identifying underperforming plots: not every hectare is the same. A plot with persistently high costs over several seasons should be reviewed before the next crop is planted.
- Reporting to investors, banks and offtake partners: transparent plot-level costs build more confidence than any estimate.
What companies should do
The following are AgrifoodV’s recommendations.
- Divide the growing area into fixed plots, each with its own code, used consistently for the cultivation log, costs and the growing-area code.
- Record inputs per application on each plot, not only per purchase invoice; record labour hours and machine hours on the same day.
- Set a cost plan for each plot at the start of the season and compare it with actual spending at least once a month.
- When assessing economic performance, present it as price and yield scenarios rather than a single figure. See also: Economics of MD2 pineapple farming: costs, risks and scenarios.
