MD2 pineapple (known in southern Vietnam as “thom MD2” or “khom MD2”) accounts for more than 80% of the pineapples imported into Europe, yet for less than 5% of Vietnam’s pineapple area. Vietnamese-language websites carry a good deal of misinformation about the variety: “MD2 stands for Malayan Dwarf 2”, “it was crossed from Queen and Cayenne in the 1980s”, “MD2 F1 planting material”. This article sets out the origin, characteristics and position of MD2 based on authoritative sources, and serves as the hub page of the MD2 pineapple series on agrifoodv.com.
Key points
- MD2 is hybrid 73-114, bred by the Pineapple Research Institute of Hawaii in 1970 and selected in 1973. “MD” stands for Mrs Millie Dillard, not “Malayan Dwarf”.
- Del Monte launched MD2 on the US and European markets in 1996; about 10 years later, MD2 had almost entirely replaced Cayenne on the fresh pineapple shelf.
- Strengths: low acidity, high vitamin C, resistance to internal browning, and the best tolerance of cold storage among commercial varieties. Weaknesses: prone to natural flowering and susceptible to heart rot.
- In Vietnam, MD2 accounts for less than 5% of about 52,000 ha of pineapple; there are no official statistics on the MD2 area.
Origin: verified milestones
According to an article by Bartholomew in Pineapple News No. 16 (2009), the newsletter of the Pineapple Working Group of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), written by the person who prepared MD2’s award nomination:
- 1970: Dr David D.F. Williams, a breeder at the Pineapple Research Institute of Hawaii (a non-profit institute funded by Hawaii’s pineapple companies), made the cross between two hybrids, 58-1184 and 59-443.
- 1973: two promising plants were selected, numbered 73-50 and 73-114. MD2 is 73-114; 73-50 is its “sibling” from the same cross.
- 1980–1981: the Institute passed both selections to Del Monte and Maui Pineapple for further evaluation; in 1981 Del Monte named 73-114 “MD-2” after Mrs Millie Dillard, wife of the then general manager of Del Monte Hawaii.
- 1980s: Del Monte took MD2 to Costa Rica.
- 1996: MD2 was officially launched on the US and European markets.
Genetically, both parent lines are more than 50% Smooth Cayenne; Queen makes up only a very small share (about 1/32) of a complex combination of Smooth Cayenne, Smooth Guatemala, Pernambuco, Ruby and Queen (Taniguchi et al., Pineapple News No. 15, 2008). Commercial pineapple is propagated vegetatively, so every MD2 plant today is a clone of the original 73-114 plant. See the article why “MD2 F1” is a misnomer.
Fruit characteristics
Bartholomew (2009) describes MD2 as having a bright golden shell, yellow flesh, slightly higher soluble solids than Smooth Cayenne, markedly lower acidity (especially in winter), higher vitamin C, and an exceptionally long post-harvest life: “no pineapple in international trade tolerates cold storage as well as MD2”. MD2 is also highly resistant to internal browning, a physiological disorder common in Cayenne and Queen.
Measurements from the same germplasm collection in Guangdong (Lu et al., Molecules, 2014): MD2 had vitamin C of 33.57 mg/100 g, the highest of 26 genotypes, compared with 5.08–7.68 mg/100 g in two Smooth Cayenne lines; acidity of 0.53% compared with 0.73–1.23%. Brix, however, is not always higher in MD2 than in Cayenne; the consistent difference is lower acidity. See the articles MD2 vs Cayenne compared and sweetness (°Brix) of MD2 pineapple.
Why MD2 won the fresh fruit market
Before the mid-1990s, world fresh pineapple exports were small and the industry revolved around canned Cayenne. Cayenne is much more acidic in winter, so fresh fruit quality was uneven across the year. MD2 solved exactly this problem. After its launch, MD2 fruit sold at a premium over Cayenne for about 10 years, and over the same period almost entirely replaced Cayenne on supermarket fresh pineapple shelves in Europe, the UK and the US; once Cayenne disappeared, the price premium largely disappeared too (Bartholomew, 2009). CBI reports that more than 80% of pineapples imported into Europe are MD2 (2017 data).
Ghana is a cautionary example: the country’s pineapple exports fell sharply around 2000 because the market preferred MD2 to Cayenne; in 2002 the Government provided USD 2 million in support to rapidly scale up production of tissue-cultured MD2 plants (Bartholomew, 2009, citing the Ghana Export Promotion Council).
Weaknesses to plan for
- Prone to natural flowering in cool weather, far more so than Cayenne; this is a “serious physiological weakness” that makes harvest scheduling difficult (Taniguchi et al., 2008).
- Susceptible to Phytophthora heart rot and root rot, much more so than Cayenne.
- Canned, its flavour is rated lower than Cayenne.
- The flesh is more translucent and bruises more easily; large fruit is often slightly misshapen in some regions.
MD2 in Vietnam
According to Ministry of Agriculture and Environment figures cited by the Government News (August 2025), Vietnam has about 52,000 ha of pineapple, with MD2 accounting for less than 5% of the area. The Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute introduced and trialled MD2 from 2006 and has a technical protocol for the northern provinces. The national MD2 area has not yet been published in official statistics. The expanding growing areas are linked to processing plants in Can Tho, Ha Tinh, Nghe An and Lao Cai; see the pillar article pineapple juice exports and MD2 growing areas.

What companies should do
AgrifoodV’s recommendations:
- Base the decision to plant MD2 on the outlet: fresh fruit, juice or concentrate, which buyer, which specifications. Choose the market first, the variety second.
- Verify variety information back to the source: has the variety been self-declared for circulation, and has the planting material been tested for viruses? Do not buy on the strength of an “F1” label.
- Plan for MD2’s two specific risks, natural flowering and heart rot, in the design of the growing area and the delivery schedule.
AgrifoodV supports companies from market selection and processing plant direction to organising MD2 raw-material growing areas.
